【明報專訊】全句話係「針唔拮到肉唔知痛」，指情况之壞只有當事人領略得到，像切膚之痛，不足為外人道。

不知道英文可有類似的話，於是上網一查，赫然click到什麼在線字典上，有這樣一條胡來的翻譯："Needle （針） not antagonistic to the meat （拮唔到肉） well known（唔知？） pain（痛）"。

原話直譯，可以是You wouldn’t feel the pain until/unless you feel the needle，但往往說的並不真與痛有關，重點是難處、困境，總之就係辛苦，而非當事人、不是受害人，是不會明白的：

‧ You wouldn’t know what it’s really like.

‧ You just can’t imagine how things were.

‧You simply won’t understand what will actually happen.

‧ You’ll never appreciate the situation.

講到底，是說外人體會不了切膚之痛。不過要小心，「切膚之痛」許多時候說的真是痛，有關pain, sorrow and suffering。

例 : We probably would not be able to understand the actual pain suffered by the victims’ families.

不是死難者的家屬，或就未能理解他們的切膚之痛。

更要小心的，是一句be at pains to do something，與痛完全無關，是正面的話，形容勤勤力力，至費煞苦心地做一件事。To take great pains，就是不遺餘力了。

例︰The police conducted a painstaking probe.

警方進行了艱苦的調查。

例︰The teacher painstakingly explained the concept.

教師仔細地解釋了這套理念。

所以若有人叫你做a painstaking person，千萬別誤會這是批評，以為人家在說你是個痛苦的、或令人痛苦的人。不對，a painstaking person係句讚美，話你是個勤奮的人！
